To Encounter Jesus Christ in His Church and to Share Him with Others
"Being Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person, which gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction." - Pope Benedict XVI
Who We Are
Saints Philip and James is different from other parishes.
Why?
Well, Saints Philip and James is a parish given to Dominicans, and Dominicans given to the parish.
As a result, the Dominican charism of preaching for the salvation of souls shapes every aspect of parish life. The Dominicans live in the truth of the Word of God; they are converted and sanctified by it; and they preach it. The life of a Dominican consists of four pillars: prayer, study, the communal life, and the apostolate. These consequently inform our parish life.
We are in the Charles Village neighborhood of Baltimore, celebrating the Sacraments, fostering spiritual and intellectual growth, serving the poor, and ministering to the students, faculty, staff and greater Johns Hopkins University community.
On July 1, 2010, at the request of His Excellency Edwin O'Brien the 15th Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, the Dominican Friars of the Province of Saint Joseph were entrusted with the pastoral care of Saints Philip and James Parish and the ministry of the Johns Hopkins University Catholic Community. This new venture, a true union of ministries serving both residents of the Charles Village neighborhood and students of Johns Hopkins, became known as Saints Philip and James Catholic Church and University Parish. Soon after the merger of ministries, the Johns Hopkins Newman Center was moved to the lower level of the parish rectory and the university students became a vibrant part of parish life with two Dominican friars serving the parish as dedicated chaplains to the university's Catholic community. In 2011, the parish also became home to the Baltimore Frassati Fellowship which serves young adults in their 20s and 30s of many parishes throughout the Baltimore area.
The parish is historic and young, faithful and vibrant, stable and growing, welcoming all who seek to know, love, and serve our Lord Jesus Christ. We foster and nurture a truly Catholic community with worship, prayer, faith-sharing, and service to the poor. Our parish home is one of the most beautiful and unique churches in Baltimore, certainly architecturally, but even more so in the diversity and faithfulness of our parishioners.
We believe that Jesus is the answer to the longing of every heart. Encountering Jesus in His Church, and following Him along the path of life, changes everything. Helping people encounter Jesus is the most important contribution we have to make in the lives of our parishioners and those they encounter.
